The Unicoi County Heritage Museum

The Unicoi County Heritage Museum, opened to the public on July 3, 1982, is located in a century-old frame house that was constructed in 1903 as the home of the first superintendent of the Erwin Fish Hatchery. Each room of the home contains interesting exhibits unique to Unicoi County. From the Blue Ridge Pottery Room featuring hand-painted pottery from Erwin’s Southern Pottery Business, to railroad memorabilia, the museum brings to life Unicoi County’s history.  The museum is handicapped accessible and open year-round, Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed on major holidays.

Bogart Bowman Cabin

The two-story Bogart-Bowman Cabin, dog trot and adjoining kitchen, built between the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, features architectural details of early frontier carpentry. The chimney and fireplace located in the main cabin were constructed of native Tennessee limestone. The Bogart-Bowman log cabin and park is a site for educational opportunities for local children and the public, that will include local and state history, early frontier social and cultural practices, as well as outdoor study of native plants.

Erwin National Fish Hatchery

Established in 1894 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Erwin National Fish Hatchery produces 10-13 million disease-free eggs annually from four strains of rainbow trout broodstock. Erwin National Fish Hatchery has been raising and shipping fish for over 120 years. The eggs they produce are shipped to other Federal, State and Tribal hatcheries to support their fishery management efforts. The hatchery also provides eggs to research centers, classrooms, and universities. Broodstock operations are performed in a manner that will preserve or optimize the genetic diversity of hatchery fish.
